Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome and remained the usual way of writing numbers throughout Europe well into the Late Middle Ages.
Conversion Rules
- Addition: When a smaller numeral follows a larger one, add the values (VI = 6)
- Subtraction: When a smaller numeral precedes a larger one, subtract the smaller from the larger (IV = 4, IX = 9)
- Repetition: A symbol can be repeated up to three times (III = 3, XXX = 30)
- Subtractive combinations: Only I, X, and C can be subtracted, and only from the next two higher values
